Whispers of the Starkin: The Io Incident, #1

Rhetta,

Shut this debacle down. I no longer care whether you demote and replace me for insubordination. We are, at best, a matter of weeks from another equal or worse catastrophe. Exactly how long do you think you’ll keep all this hidden?

The following is my attempt to piece together, as best as may be, the events of this past June 17th, 3909, culminating in the total destruction of Project Hub B-2 on Io and the loss of all personnel.

If you still care to keep count, you may remember there were 3,607 sapient beings employed by Project Precursor at Hub B-2.

As far as we can tell from sifting the debris and examining any corpses not destroyed in the facility’s detonation, the majority of staff at Hub B-2 were killed by the same weapon. It appears to have been a mass driver of unprecedented power; Forensic AI has reconstructed enough of the ruins to determine that punctures and exit holes in many of the walls correspond to wounds on dead personnel.

Again, numbers for you, Rhetta. Perhaps enough digits will make some impression: the internal walls at Hub B-2 were the same Lathwardium alloy used for the bulkheads on your flagship, and its external armor was triple-laminated Rheinmetall Neustahl with omni-directional shielding. The mass driver fired with such abandon through the facility was able to pierce up to three interior walls and still punch out of the complex; we have found impact craters up to five hundred meters in width scattered for dozens of miles across Io’s surface.

It should go without —DATA CORRUPTED— the consequences for a human operator —DATA CORRUPTED— this in mind —DATA CORRUPTED—
—DATA CORRUPTED—

—WE WATCH, ADMIRAL—
—WE KNOW—
